Well, we're over a week into our big 50th year renovation and despite the delay Winter Storm Jonas dropped on us we're making good progress. I'd like to take a bit just to talk about what's going on, exactly.
Firstly, the kitchen--for it's size, it's a mighty fine kitchen. Where it's suffered has mostly been in age, with repairs to the floor here and there over the years resulting a bit of odd layering. That left us with an uneven floor which really made itself known when we installed some of the newer kitchen appliances back in fall of 2014. We've had all the old flooring pulled up down to the very base layer, between the boards of which you could see the basement through the cracks. Interestingly, these boards were laid in a diagonal pattern one of our crew remarked upon as being more of a late 1800s' character.
Where that gets interesting is when we look at this photo circa 1890, courtesy of the fine folks at Old Time D.C.:
This was Meredith's, a frame house that served as a furniture shop. You might note that egress points are similar to the existing building--we're not sure how coincidental this is! Between this photograph and our opening is a little fuzzy at points...we know the previous occupant of the building was the 601 Club, a cowboy bar, but before that? Stationery shop has been mentioned but we don't have dates. And the question of when the brick structure went up is too big to ignore, too.
This will be where we'll share what we find in that department, though, as well as via our mailing list, which you can sign up for at the bottom of every page here on our website.
